2027: Ex-Labour Party Candidate Launches ‘Village People Movement’ to Mobilise Nigerians for Political Action
By Lawal Sodiq, Osun
A former House of Representatives candidate of the Labour Party for Ife Federal Constituency in the 2023 general election, Olamide Awosunle, has unveiled a new sociopolitical platform aimed at deepening citizens’ involvement in Nigeria’s political process ahead of the 2027 elections.
The platform, named Village People Movement, was formally launched on Thursday at Ife City Hall in Enuwa, Ile-Ife, Osun State, drawing a diverse audience of youths, women and community leaders who converged to witness the debut of the initiative.
Speaking at the event, Awosunle, who coordinates the movement, described the gathering as a call to national consciousness, urging Nigerians to move beyond passive political engagement and take responsibility for shaping the country’s future.
He expressed concern over the nation’s challenges, including insecurity, joblessness, failing infrastructure, weak institutions and corruption, which he said continue to slow development and erode public trust.
According to him, meaningful transformation in Nigeria can only come when citizens become actively involved in governance rather than remaining indifferent.
“The same system that created our current realities cannot fix them without a deliberate shift from the people,” he said, stressing the need for renewed civic responsibility and a change in leadership mindset.
Awosunle explained that the movement is structured as a grassroots-driven platform focused on raising political awareness, promoting accountability and encouraging citizens to participate more actively in democratic processes.
He noted that the initiative seeks to inspire Nigerians to transition from mere observers to key players in governance, especially as preparations gradually build towards future elections.
Also speaking at the launch, a prominent member of the group, Dr. Obisakin Busayo, clarified that the Village People Movement is not a political party but a civic mobilisation platform designed to educate and engage citizens politically.
She, however, indicated that the movement could, in the future, transform into a political party or collaborate with existing political organisations that share its vision.
Busayo added that although the initiative was introduced in Ile-Ife, it is intended to have a nationwide reach, with expansion plans already underway beyond Osun State.
