2027: Goje’s Supporters Reject Moves to Replace Him in Gombe Central

By Auwal Ahmad Umar

Political tensions are beginning to build in Gombe Central Senatorial District as supporters of former Governor and serving Senator, Mohammad Danjuma Goje, drawn largely from Yamaltu/Deba Local Government Area, have rejected moves by some politicians seeking to replace him ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The development follows reports that certain political actors from Yamaltu/Deba recently approached Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, urging him to support the emergence of another candidate from the area to take over the senatorial seat currently occupied by Senator Goje.

However, in what appears to be a counter-position from within the same local government, a coalition of residents, APC loyalists and stakeholders from Yamaltu/Deba has declared strong support for the senator’s continuity in the National Assembly, insisting that competence, experience and the will of the people should prevail.

The position of the group was made public on Friday when Dr. Newton Moses read the memorandum to journalists, declaring that the people of Yamaltu/Deba were united in their support for Senator Goje’s return to the Senate.

According to the memorandum, Senator Goje remains a seasoned lawmaker whose continued presence in the Senate would further benefit Gombe Central and strengthen its voice in national affairs.

Dr. Moses said the call to replace the senator should not be driven by narrow political interests, but by a fair assessment of performance, leadership capacity and democratic legitimacy.

He noted that continuity in the National Assembly offers significant advantages, especially in a system where legislative experience, seniority and strategic relationships often translate into stronger influence and increased access to developmental opportunities.

“Continuity in leadership, especially in a legislative environment, is not merely desirable — it is essential. Lawmaking is a complex and evolving process that benefits immensely from institutional memory, strategic relationships and procedural mastery,” the memorandum stated.

The supporters emphasized that the Nigerian Constitution does not impose any tenure limits on lawmakers, stressing that the decision on representation must ultimately reflect the wishes of the electorate rather than informal political arrangements.

They further noted that Senator Goje’s long-standing experience in governance and lawmaking places him in a unique position to continue advancing the interests of Gombe Central at the national level.

“Distinguished Senator Mohammad Danjuma Goje stands as a towering figure whose years of legislative experience have translated into tangible dividends of democracy for Gombe Central and beyond,” the group added.

The emerging division within Yamaltu/Deba highlights early political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections, with competing interests beginning to shape the future of representation in the senatorial district.

While Governor Inuwa Yahaya has yet to publicly respond to the reported request by some politicians, the development is already generating conversations within the APC and among political observers in the state.

Supporters of Senator Goje, however, remain firm, maintaining that his track record, accessibility and established influence in national politics make a strong case for continuity.

“By returning Senator Goje to the Senate, Gombe Central stands to gain even more. His seniority and established influence will ensure greater access to federal opportunities, increased developmental projects and stronger representation in critical national decisions,” the group said.

They reaffirmed their loyalty to the APC and their support for the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, while calling on party leaders and stakeholders to respect the will of the people and support Senator Goje’s return in 2027.

As political activities gradually intensify, the unfolding debate in Yamaltu/Deba may shape one of the earliest and most significant contests ahead of the next general election in Gombe State.

Galadima Joins Adamawa Governorship Race, Promises Jobs, Unity Under APC

A former Executive Secretary of the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF), Ahmed Galadima, has officially declared his intention to run for governor of Adamawa State on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), setting the stage for a potentially competitive contest within the ruling party.

Galadima made his ambition known on Wednesday during a visit to the newly inaugurated state executives of the APC in Yola, where he also pledged allegiance to the party leadership and its structures.

Addressing party officials, he described his decision as the outcome of extensive consultations with a broad spectrum of stakeholders across the state, including elders, youths, women, professionals, and grassroots supporters.

“I present myself as a proud indigene of Adamawa who has devoted three decades to national service, most recently at the PTDF,” he said. “After engaging widely with our people, I have resolved to offer myself for service as governor under the APC.”

The aspirant outlined key priorities of his proposed administration, stressing the need to foster unity across ethnic and religious lines while tackling unemployment and boosting economic opportunities.

He pledged to focus on agricultural development, expand rural infrastructure, improve access to quality healthcare, and create an enabling environment to attract investors and generate jobs for the growing population.

Responding, the APC State Chairman, Alhaji Hamza Madagali, assured all aspirants of a transparent and equitable process ahead of the party’s primaries.

He said the party leadership in the state was committed to conducting credible and inclusive primaries, giving every contestant a fair chance to emerge as the party’s flag bearer.

Galadima’s entry into the race adds to early political manoeuvrings ahead of the next governorship election in Adamawa, with analysts expecting more contenders to declare interest in the coming months.

Dr Jamilu Isyaku Gwamna, a former Managing Director of Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), has declared his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in Gombe State on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Mr Gwamna formally submitted his Letter of Intent on Wednesday at both ward and local government levels, in line with the party’s nomination procedures.

Speaking at a brief ceremony at the APC state secretariat in Gombe, the governorship aspirant said his decision was driven by a development agenda he described as a “New Vision for Continuity and sustainability.”.

He said the plan is aimed at consolidating ongoing development efforts while introducing reforms and policies that would ensure long-term economic growth and improved living standards.

“Our focus is to build on what has been achieved and introduce innovative ideas that will guarantee sustainable development and inclusive growth for all,” he said.

Mr Gwamna added that his administration, if elected, would prioritise transparent governance, economic expansion, infrastructure development, and empowerment programmes targeting youths and women.

He also appealed to party members and residents of the state to support his ambition, saying collective commitment would be required to move Gombe forward.

Responding, the APC chairman in Gombe State, Mohammed Dantata Ndus, commended the aspirant for adhering to due process and wished him success in the race.

Mr Ndus, however, stressed the need for unity among party members, urging stakeholders to work together to secure victory for the APC in the 2027 general elections.

Nsukka Coalition Raises Alarm Over ‘Candidate Imposition’, Vows to Defend Voters’ Will

By Jamila Muhammad

A coalition of civil society organisations under the Nsukka Democratic Movement (NDM) has cautioned political actors against attempts to manipulate electoral outcomes in Enugu North Senatorial District, warning that any effort to impose candidates could undermine democratic integrity ahead of forthcoming elections.

In a statement signed by its Secretary-General, Comrade James Ezema, the group said recent developments in the political space suggest a growing trend of behind-the-scenes arrangements aimed at predetermining candidates.

According to the coalition, the stakes extend beyond routine contests, stressing that the credibility of democracy in the Nsukka zone is on the line.

“What is at stake is not merely the outcome of upcoming elections, but the very soul of democracy in Nsukka zone,” the statement read.

The group expressed concern over what it described as a deliberate pattern of political interference, warning that elections must remain open, competitive and reflective of the people’s choices rather than decisions taken in private.

“Elections are meant to be competitive, participatory, and reflective of the people’s will, not ceremonial endorsements of decisions concluded in private rooms,” it added.

The NDM maintained that candidates who emerge through non-transparent processes would struggle with legitimacy, regardless of official results declared.

It also criticised what it termed the persistence of “political feudalism,” arguing that influence or proximity to power should not determine electoral outcomes.

“Nsukka is not a political estate to be inherited or allocated. It is a politically conscious society with a strong tradition of civic awareness,” the group stated.

The coalition further alleged that intimidation and subtle coercion are increasingly shaping the political environment, warning that such tactics could erode public confidence in the electoral process.

“Reports of intimidation and coercive pressure create a climate of fear that is fundamentally incompatible with free and fair elections,” the statement noted.

While addressing the current administration led by Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, the group described any approach perceived as excluding key constituencies as politically risky, noting that voter alienation could have electoral consequences.

“Political legitimacy is earned through inclusion, performance and respect, not enforced through pressure,” it said.

The coalition also referenced past voting patterns in the zone, arguing that Nsukka voters have demonstrated independence and cannot be taken for granted in future elections.

It raised concerns about what it called a mismatch between political loyalty and development, citing persistent gaps in infrastructure, economic opportunities and social services across the district.

“Sustained political support has not translated into commensurate development. This contradiction is no longer acceptable,” the group said.

The NDM extended its warning to opposition parties, including actors within the All Progressives Congress (APC), urging them to avoid similar undemocratic practices and instead engage voters through credible ideas and grassroots mobilisation.

Looking ahead, the coalition warned that the 2027 elections could mark a turning point if current trends persist.

“2027 will not be business as usual. It will be a defining moment with far-reaching consequences,” it cautioned.

The group called on stakeholders—including political parties, security agencies and electoral bodies to uphold the integrity of the electoral process, insisting that safeguarding democracy is a shared responsibility.

“The people of Enugu North Senatorial District will determine their political future—not political elites or coercive structures,” the statement concluded.
