The Chairman of the New Nigeria Development Company, Lamis Shehu Dikko, says the company is embarking on a major restructuring aimed at improving performance and repositioning it as a more efficient holding company.

Mr Dikko spoke on Wednesday at the opening of a two-day board and management retreat held at the Wells Carlton Hotels & Apartments, where stakeholders gathered to review the company’s operations and chart a new strategic direction.

He said the firm would adopt a more disciplined investment approach, driven by clear priorities, prudent capital allocation and stronger execution.

“We will pursue a focused, value-driven portfolio strategy anchored on discipline in execution and consistency in leadership,” he said.

Mr Dikko explained that the retreat was designed to bring together board members, management and external experts to reassess the company’s business model and identify practical steps for reform.

He said the process would also help the company confront its current realities and align its operations with long-term growth objectives.

“For over seven decades, NNDC has played a significant role in driving industrialisation and investment across Northern Nigeria. However, performance across some of our assets has been uneven,” he said.

“Our financial outcomes have not always reflected the scale of our potential. This retreat is an opportunity to turn those reflections into clear decisions and measurable results.”

The Managing Director of the company, Shehu Mai-Bornu, said reforms were necessary to reposition NNDC as a key driver of industrial development in the North.

He noted that the company must evolve in response to changing economic realities while staying true to its founding vision.

The retreat is being facilitated by KPMG Professional Services and has attracted participants from across the financial and corporate sectors, including Suleiman Ndanusa, Mohammed Kari, Mohammed Hayatudden, Aliyu Suleiman and Kemi Babalogbon.

Discussions are expected to produce a reform roadmap with defined priorities and performance targets aimed at strengthening the company’s role in regional economic development.

Ooni to Adeleke: Fast-Track Ife Projects as Election Season Nears

By Lawal Sodiq, Osun

The Ooni, Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, on Wednesday urged Ademola Adeleke to hasten the completion of key infrastructure projects in Ile-Ife, stressing their importance to economic growth and mobility in the ancient city.

The monarch made the call while receiving the governor at the Ile-Oodua Palace in Ile-Ife, where he also praised Adeleke’s leadership approach and offered prayers ahead of the forthcoming governorship election in Osun State.

A statement issued by the palace’s Director of Media and Public Affairs, Otunba Moses Olafare, said the governor arrived with the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, top officials, and political associates and was received by the Ooni alongside traditional rulers and dignitaries.

Speaking during the visit, Adeleke described the Ooni as a widely respected and charismatic royal figure, noting that his trip to Ile-Ife was part of ongoing efforts to evaluate projects and ensure effective service delivery to residents.

“I am pleased to visit Kabiyesi. This visit also allows us to inspect ongoing works, including major road constructions and the Lagere Flyover. Where necessary, contractors will be directed to speed up delivery timelines,” the governor said.

In his remarks, the Ooni commended Adeleke for what he described as a people-orientated style of governance, noting that development projects under his administration are visible across various parts of the state.

He, however, called for urgency in completing strategic projects in Ile-Ife, particularly the Lagere Flyover, which he described as critical to easing traffic congestion and stimulating economic activities across the Ife Federal Constituency.

“Lagere is a central hub for both economic and social activities. Its timely completion will greatly enhance movement and commerce. We appeal for faster progress on the project for the benefit of our people,” the monarch said.

Looking ahead to the governorship poll, Ooni also prayed for peaceful elections and urged political stakeholders to prioritise unity and stability in the state.

“As we approach another electoral cycle, I pray for peace and orderly conduct. May the state continue to progress, and may leaders remain committed to the welfare of the people,” he added.

The visit underscores growing collaboration between traditional institutions and the government in driving development and maintaining stability in the state, which is essential for ensuring a peaceful electoral process and addressing the needs of the community.

Terror at Border: Boko Haram Attack Leaves 20 Dead in Borno–Adamawa Communities

By Tada Jutha, Maiduguri

At least 20 residents have been killed in coordinated attacks by suspected Boko Haram insurgents on two border communities in Borno and Adamawa states, deepening fears over renewed violence in Nigeria’s Northeast.

The attacks, which occurred on Tuesday evening, targeted Pubagu community in Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State and Mayo-Ladde in Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

Confirming the incident on Wednesday in Maiduguri, the Chairman of Askira/Uba LGA, Mada Saidu, said 11 people were killed in Pubagu, while nine others lost their lives across the border in Adamawa.

“Yes, there was an attack in Pubagu around 4 p.m. on Tuesday, where 11 people were killed. In Mayo-Ladde, Hong LGA of Adamawa State, nine people were also killed,” he said, putting the total death toll at 20.

The affected communities lie along the southern edge of the Sambisa Forest, separated by River Yedzaram, a corridor often exploited by insurgents moving between the two states.

Saidu explained that the attackers overran local security formations before unleashing violence on residents.

“When we got there with the military, we discovered that the initial resistance came from local vigilantes and hunters, but they were overwhelmed by the terrorists,” he added.

Eyewitnesses described a prolonged and terrifying assault, with the insurgents arriving on motorcycles, firing indiscriminately and setting homes ablaze.

A survivor, who spoke on condition of anonymity, recounted the ordeal: “They came in the evening and started shooting for hours. Houses and shops were burnt, and both men and women were killed. We had no protection.”

Residents said the attackers looted food supplies and other valuables, operating with little resistance after overpowering local defenders.

“The vigilantes and hunters tried, but the terrorists had superior weapons and were more in number. Eventually, they had to flee to save their lives,” another source said.

The latest killings come barely a week after a similar attack in Mussa community, also in Askira/Uba LGA, where insurgents reportedly killed four soldiers and a civilian on April 16.

The renewed violence highlights ongoing security challenges in communities bordering the Sambisa Forest, long considered a stronghold of Boko Haram and its splinter factions.

2027: Ex-Labour Party Candidate Launches ‘Village People Movement’ to Mobilise Nigerians for Political Action

By Lawal Sodiq, Osun

A former House of Representatives candidate of the Labour Party for Ife Federal Constituency in the 2023 general election, Olamide Awosunle, has unveiled a new sociopolitical platform aimed at deepening citizens’ involvement in Nigeria’s political process ahead of the 2027 elections.

The platform, named Village People Movement, was formally launched on Thursday at Ife City Hall in Enuwa, Ile-Ife, Osun State, drawing a diverse audience of youths, women and community leaders who converged to witness the debut of the initiative.

Speaking at the event, Awosunle, who coordinates the movement, described the gathering as a call to national consciousness, urging Nigerians to move beyond passive political engagement and take responsibility for shaping the country’s future.

He expressed concern over the nation’s challenges, including insecurity, joblessness, failing infrastructure, weak institutions and corruption, which he said continue to slow development and erode public trust.

According to him, meaningful transformation in Nigeria can only come when citizens become actively involved in governance rather than remaining indifferent.

“The same system that created our current realities cannot fix them without a deliberate shift from the people,” he said, stressing the need for renewed civic responsibility and a change in leadership mindset.

Awosunle explained that the movement is structured as a grassroots-driven platform focused on raising political awareness, promoting accountability and encouraging citizens to participate more actively in democratic processes.

He noted that the initiative seeks to inspire Nigerians to transition from mere observers to key players in governance, especially as preparations gradually build towards future elections.

Also speaking at the launch, a prominent member of the group, Dr. Obisakin Busayo, clarified that the Village People Movement is not a political party but a civic mobilisation platform designed to educate and engage citizens politically.

She, however, indicated that the movement could, in the future, transform into a political party or collaborate with existing political organisations that share its vision.

Busayo added that although the initiative was introduced in Ile-Ife, it is intended to have a nationwide reach, with expansion plans already underway beyond Osun State.
