FFS, NAF partner to combat fire outbreaks
The Federal Fire Service (FFS) is partnering with the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) to combat fire outbreaks in the country with the use of firefighting aerial aircraft.
This is contained in a statement by FFS Public Relations Officer (PRO), Mr Paul Abraham, on Thursday in Abuja.
It said that the collaboration was reached during a courtesy visit by FFS Acting Controller General, Samson Karebo to the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Isiaka Amao.
The Ag. CG said that the tactical expertise of NAF in suppressing and stemming the tide of incessant fire outbreaks across the country was important.
He explained that the move would reduce the obstacles of lack of access and proximity to some fire incidents.
He said that the provision of aerial aircraft would eliminate the challenges faced by firefighters in entering some burning buildings.
Karebo said that the aircraft would be available nationwide to respond to fire outbreaks, protect communities, public and commercial buildings as well as support firefighters on the ground.
He explained that under ideal conditions, aircraft can slow a fire enough to allow ground-based firefighters an opportunity to contain sections of the fire’s edge by constructing a fire line.
He, however, noted that wrong winds or dense smoke can also make it impossible for aircraft to operate safely or effectively.
On his part, the Chief of Air Staff assured the FFS of providing necessary supports to ensure the safety of Nigerians and their properties.
Amao stressed the need for intensive training for both agencies as it relates to aerial fire fighting to boost effectiveness.
He said as climate change heats up, alongside the possibility of man-made fire outbreaks, preparations for the firestorms that are to come was a step in the right direction.
“To this effect, a committee has been set up to commence the processes of collaboration,” he said.
