IWD: Mrs Lagbaja calls for greater opportunities, economic prospects for women

The need to address gender gap and recognize the crucial roles of women in a developing society while working towards creating a world where women have equal opportunities has been advocated.
National President, Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association NAOWA, and wife of the Chief of Army Staff, Mrs Mariya Abiodun Lagbaja, made the call at a Symposium to commemorate the 2024 International Women’s Day, held at the Army Headquarters Command Officers’ Mess Asokoro Abuja.
Mrs Lagbaja emphasized the importance of creating an environment where women are empowered to take up greater responsibilities beyond their traditional or cultural roles determined by the society.
Organised by NAOWA with the theme, Inspire Inclusion, the event served as a platform to raise awareness about issues affecting women globally such as, gender-based violence, discrimination, child marriage, healthcare amongst others.
Mrs Lagbaja noted that this year’s United Nation’s International Women’s Day theme: “Invest in women: Accelerate progress”, aligns perfectly with NAOWA’s commitment to promote equal opportunities for women.
While calling for more female gender inclusion, she averred that, gender discrimination still exist and affects women’s access to healthcare, economic and leadership, opportunities amongst others.
In her words: ” Through this event, we aim to provide a platform for open dialogue, where we can share experiences, learn from experts, and address questions related to gender equality and empowerment for women.
“As we celebrate International Women’s Day today, let us remember that our collective efforts have the power to bring about positive change. By spreading awareness, promoting women’s rights, and supporting each other, we can “Inspire Inclusion.”
In her remarks, the President of the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association and wife of the Chief of Defence Staff, Mrs. Oghogho Musa, highlighted the importance of International Women’s Day as a day dedicated to honouring the virtues of women and recognising their remarkable achievements throughout history.
Mrs. Musa expressed, “Through our advocacy efforts, we have promoted professional excellence and the well-being of women in our communities. It is crucial for us to rally for increased support from society by encouraging our family members and colleagues to champion noble causes.”
She noted the persistent challenges faced by women, including systematic barriers and discrimination that hinder their access to education, healthcare, economic opportunities, and leadership roles. Mrs. Musa urged for collective action to create a world where every woman and girl can unlock her full potential and contribute her skills to society.
Emphasising the importance of positive mental fortitude, Mrs. Musa called on women to demonstrate strength both individually and collectively, fostering respect and promoting the inclusion of women and girls in leadership and decision-making roles.
The event featured a symbolic walk where the wife of the Chief of Army Staff Mrs Lagbaja led women through the streets to raise awareness about gender issues, and women inclusion.
