Nigeria Plunged into Darkness as Power Grid Suffers Total Collapse
Nigeria is grappling with a nationwide power outage after the complete failure of the country’s electricity grid in the early hours of Thursday morning.
The grid reportedly collapsed entirely at approximately 12:40 a.m. on September 14, 2023, resulting in a massive loss of power supply to electricity distributors across the nation.
Multiple sources within the power sector, along with electricity distribution companies, confirmed this unfortunate incident on Thursday morning.
The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company Plc issued an official notice titled ‘Notice of Total System Collapse’ on the same day.

According to the notice, “The EEDC wishes to inform her esteemed customers of a total system collapse which occurred at 12:40 am today, September 14, 2023. This has resulted in the loss of supply currently being experienced across the network. Due to this development, all our interface TCN (Transmission Company of Nigeria) stations are out of supply, and we are unable to provide service to our customers in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo states. We are on standby awaiting detailed information of the collapse and restoration of supply from the National Control Centre, Osogbo.”
The notice was signed by the Head of Corporate Communications at EEDC, Emeka Ezeh. As of now, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), responsible for managing Nigeria’s grid, has not issued any statement regarding this incident.
Just a week ago, the transmission firm celebrated what it described as 400 days of power grid stability in Nigeria, proudly asserting that the grid had remained free of any collapses throughout these 400 days.
