In the wake of the recent wave of violent attacks perpetrated by armed militia groups in several communities across Plateau State, there has been a growing chorus of concern from experts and stakeholders, urging the government and relevant authorities to take decisive action to safeguard the lives and properties of citizens.
Dr. Mohammed Sani Abubakar, a prominent counterinsurgency expert, has emphasized the pressing need for the government to address deep-seated structural issues between the predominantly Muslim herder communities and the largely Christian farming populations in Plateau State.
In a recent interview, Dr. Abubakar underscored the necessity for proactive measures, including intelligence gathering, surveillance, and the establishment of an efficient and timely justice delivery system, all of which are currently lacking in the country.
Expressing apprehension about the absence of a permanent solution to the ongoing crisis, Dr. Abubakar warned of the potential for further deadly attacks if substantive action is not taken without delay. He highlighted the urgent requirement for the military to enhance its operations on the Plateau, advocating for the reinforcement of the Special Task Force to ensure optimal performance in addressing the security challenges.
Dr. Abubakar voiced his belief that a more effective military presence would have the potential to avert the tragic loss of over 130 lives and the injury of another 300 individuals in the recent attacks. His comments underscore the critical importance of bolstering security measures in the region to prevent further bloodshed and instability.
