Zulum reopens Maiduguri-Dikwa-Gambouru road with patrol vehicles
Tada JUTHA, Maiduguri
Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum has reopened the 138-kilometre Maiduguri-Dikwa-Gambouru road with unlimited access for motorists and travellers.
The road was closed by the Nigerian Army for about three years over the Boko Haram insurgency that killed several people.
Reopening the road, yesterday (Friday) at the Muna Garage, Governor Zulum disclosed: “This road was closed because of the Boko Haram insurgency,” adding that the road was reopened about three years ago, but with limited access to vehicular movements.
According to him, motorists and commuters can ply the reopened road now between 8 am and 2 pm daily.
“Today we’re witnessing the reopening of the Dikwa/Gambouru/Gambouru road with unlimited access,” he said, noting that the logistics needed by the Army and other security agencies were provided.
At the Dikwa road reopening, he said: “We’re here today to re-open Dikwa/Gambouru road to ensure the complete access to regular movements of motorists and commuters.
He said it will ensure socio-economic development and overcome the challenges of insecurity to lives and property.
He said that vehicles that are coming from Maiduguri to Dikwa are free to travel to Gambouru/Ngala, a border community with Cameroon.
“This is because of the protection needed for motorists and commuters,” he said, warning that the Army schedules of movements should be strictly adhered to.
According to him, eighteen vehicles were distributed to the Army, Civilian JTF and hunters to patrol the reopened border road with Cameroon.
He, therefore, urged the people to support and cooperate with Army and Civilian JTF to strengthen the relationship on security.
The Theatre Commander, Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), Maj-Gen. Christopher Musa said that the reopening of the 138-kilometre road will improve economic activities, as well as the security of people’s lives and property.
While thanking the Governor, he said: “I want to encourage you not to relent, because of the enormous security challenges in the state,” stating that the army will continue to support the state government in the restoration of peace in the northeast.
