Crackdown in Maiduguri: Police Arrest Eight, Seize Illicit Drugs in Renewed War Against Substance Abuse
Crackdown in Maiduguri: Police Arrest Eight, Seize Illicit Drugs in Renewed War Against Substance Abuse
By Tada Jutha, Maiduguri
As concerns continue to grow over the impact of drug abuse on youth and community safety in Borno State, the police have intensified efforts to dismantle networks involved in the distribution and consumption of illicit substances.
In a fresh operation targeting criminal activities linked to substance abuse, the Borno State Police Command arrested eight suspects and recovered various prohibited drugs during coordinated raids in parts of Maiduguri, the state capital.
The Rapid Response Squad (RRS) Anti-Social Vices Unit carried out the operation as part of an ongoing campaign by the command to tackle drug-related crimes and other social vices across the state.
According to the police, the exercise was conducted in compliance with directives issued by the Commissioner of Police, Naziru Abdulmajid, who has ordered intensified actions against drug trafficking, abuse and criminal activities associated with narcotics.
Speaking about the development, the spokesperson for the command, ASP Nahum Daso, said the latest arrests demonstrate the police’s determination to rid communities of activities that threaten public safety.
“The operatives of the command’s Rapid Response Squad (RRS) Anti-Social Vices Unit have recorded another significant success,” Mr Daso said in a statement issued in Maiduguri.
He disclosed that on 1 June 2026, at about 2:20 p.m., officers carried out a targeted raid in the Bulumkutu and Dala communities within the Maiduguri Metropolitan Council.
“The RRS Anti-Social Vices Team conducted a targeted raid operation in the Bulumkutu and Dala areas of Maiduguri Metropolitan Council, which led to the arrest of eight suspects for alleged possession and consumption of prohibited substances,” he stated.
The police spokesman said a search conducted during the operation resulted in the recovery of several suspected illicit drugs and controlled substances.
Among the items recovered were 46 capsules of Tramadol, 12 wraps of dried leaves suspected to be cannabis, commonly known as Indian hemp, and two D5 tablets.
Security experts have repeatedly warned that the abuse of hard drugs and controlled substances is a major contributor to violent crimes, juvenile delinquency, and other forms of insecurity in many communities.
Mr Daso noted that the suspects have already been arraigned in court, while the recovered substances have been submitted as exhibits to support prosecution.
The latest arrests underscore the Borno State Police Command’s broader strategy of combining intelligence-led operations with community engagement to curb the spread of illicit drugs.
The command also appealed to residents to remain vigilant and support law enforcement agencies by providing credible information that could assist in identifying criminal hideouts and drug distribution networks.
Reaffirming their commitment to public safety, the police say they will continue to target individuals and groups involved in drug-related offences and other criminal activities throughout the state.
Residents with useful information were encouraged to contact the police through the command’s emergency lines as authorities sustain the campaign against substance abuse and criminality in Borno.

Zulumās Leadership Has Restored Hope in Borno, Says Al-Ansar Foundation President
By Auwal Umar, Gombe
The Founder and President of the Al-Ansar Foundation, Dr Mohammed Kyari Dikwa, has commended Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, for his administrationās efforts to rebuild the state, restore public confidence and improve the lives of residents affected by years of insurgency.
Dr Dikwa said Governor Zulumās approach to governance had gone beyond physical reconstruction to include restoring hope, expanding access to education and healthcare, supporting vulnerable citizens and creating conditions for sustainable development.
He made the assessment in a statement issued to mark the governorās 57th birthday.
According to him, Borno State has faced enormous challenges arising from insurgency, including mass displacement, destruction of communities and infrastructure and prolonged humanitarian needs.
He, however, said the administration had responded through interventions in reconstruction, resettlement, education, healthcare, agriculture, housing, road infrastructure and urban development.
āGovernor Zulum has demonstrated resilience, courage and compassion in leading Borno through one of the most challenging periods in its history,ā Dr Dikwa said.
He particularly highlighted the administrationās investments in education, including the rehabilitation and reconstruction of schools affected by insurgency.
Dr Dikwa said the investments would have a lasting impact by giving children from affected communities access to learning opportunities and helping to rebuild the future of the state.
He also commended efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery, support vulnerable citizens and rebuild critical infrastructure as part of the transition from conflict and displacement to recovery and sustainable development.
āThe true measure of leadership lies not only in the number of roads, schools, hospitals or buildings constructed, but also in the lives transformed, communities restored, children given opportunities and hope restored to those who have suffered,ā he said.
The Al-Ansar Foundation president said the restoration of hope among people who had endured years of violence and displacement remained one of the important indicators of effective leadership.
He reminded public office holders that leadership is an Amanah ā a sacred trust from Almighty Allah ā requiring justice, accountability, compassion and sincere service to humanity.
Dr Dikwa called for continued efforts to strengthen peace, security, unity and stability in Borno State and Nigeria, particularly as the state approaches another political transition.
He prayed for wisdom, strength, good health and divine guidance for Governor Zulum to enable him complete the programmes and projects initiated by his administration.
He also prayed for Allahās protection over the governor and his family and for lasting peace, prosperity and development across Borno State.
āPublic offices are temporary, but the consequences of good leadership can endure for generations,ā Dr Dikwa said.
He expressed hope that Governor Zulumās years in office would be remembered for courage, compassion, purposeful leadership and meaningful service to the people.

Zulum Hosts Sahel Envoys, Calls for Unified Response to Lake Chad Terrorism
By Tada Juth, Maiduguri
Ā Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has called for stronger regional cooperation among Sahel and Lake Chad Basin countries to confront terrorism, insurgency and the humanitarian crisis that has persisted across the region for nearly two decades.
Mr Zulum made the call on Saturday while declaring open a two-day high-level retreat involving representatives of Sahel countries and ambassadors at the Musa Usman Secretariat Complex in Maiduguri.
The meeting brought together officials and diplomats from countries affected by insecurity in the wider Sahel and Lake Chad Basin, including Nigeria, Chad, Cameroon, Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso and Mauritania.
The retreat focused on terrorism, diplomatic relations and the need for a coordinated regional response to security challenges threatening the countries.
Mr Zulum, who has consistently advocated a broader approach to addressing insecurity, said military operations alone could not end the insurgency and displacement crisis confronting the region.
āI have been consistently advocating for a multifaceted strategy that combines robust military offensives with non-kinetic interventions such as deradicalisation, reintegration and humanitarian development,ā he said.
The governor said while security forces must continue their operations against terrorist groups, governments in the region needed to strengthen intelligence sharing, border management and joint stabilisation programmes.
āWhile our armed forces continue their brave operations, we must enhance intelligence sharing, community-based border management and joint stabilisation initiatives alongside the Multinational Joint Task Force,ā he said.
Borno has remained at the centre of Nigeriaās counter-insurgency efforts since the Boko Haram insurgency escalated in 2009. The state has also borne a significant share of the humanitarian consequences, including displacement, destruction of infrastructure and disruption of livelihoods.
Mr Zulum said the experience had demonstrated the need for governments to combine security operations with measures aimed at addressing poverty, unemployment, radicalisation and other conditions that could fuel violent extremism.
The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Sola Enikanolaiye, also urged countries in the region to deepen cooperation and address the underlying causes of terrorism.
He said a sustainable solution required governments to look beyond military responses and develop coordinated strategies capable of tackling the conditions that allow extremist groups to thrive.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dunoma Umara, said Nigeria had a strong interest in the stability of the Sahel because of the regionās historical, cultural and economic connections with the country.
According to him, stability across the Sahel and Lake Chad Basin is directly linked to Nigeriaās national security and socio-economic prosperity.
The Ambassador of Chad to Nigeria, Brah Mahamat, called for collective action among countries facing the security threat, despite their membership of different regional organisations.
āAlthough we belong to different institutional groupings, this should in no way impede our common security,ā Mr Mahamat said.
He warned that terrorist groups were taking advantage of weaknesses along national borders and differences among regional blocs to expand their operations.
āLet us be clear: the enemy cares little whether we belong to CEMAC, ECOWAS or the AES. Its aim is to continue slipping across our borders, exploiting the operational limitations we have imposed upon ourselves,ā he said.
The retreat is expected to provide a platform for participating countries and diplomatic representatives to explore practical measures for improving regional security cooperation, strengthening border coordination and supporting stabilisation efforts in communities affected by terrorism.
The gathering also reinforces Maiduguriās growing importance as a centre for regional discussions on counter-terrorism, humanitarian recovery and peace-building in the Lake Chad Basin.

Borno Police Crack Down on Dead Meat Trade, Warn Butchers Against Selling Unfit Animals
By Tada Jutha, Maiduguri
The Borno State Police Command has warned butchers, meat vendors and livestock traders against slaughtering, processing or selling meat from animals that die before inspection, saying offenders will face the full weight of the law.
The Commissioner of Police, Naziru Abdulmajid, issued the warning on Thursday during a stakeholders’ meeting in Maiduguri convened to strengthen measures aimed at preventing the sale and distribution of unwholesome meat across the state.
The meeting followed the recent arrest of five suspects allegedly involved in processing and distributing meat from dead animals in Maiduguri, an incident that raised concerns over food safety and public health.
Mr Abdulmajid said the engagement was organised to prevent a recurrence of such practices and reinforce compliance with public health regulations governing meat processing and distribution.
According to him, the meeting was designed to improve monitoring systems, promote regulatory compliance and ensure that only meat certified fit for human consumption reaches the public.
“The objective is to safeguard public health by strengthening collaboration among relevant stakeholders responsible for food safety and hygiene,” the police commissioner said.
Participants at the meeting included officials from the Borno State Ministries of Health, Information and Internal Security, and Livestock and Fisheries Development, as well as representatives of the Borno State Environmental Protection Agency (BOSEPA), the Abattoir and Butchers Association, the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC), and traditional rulers.
During the discussions, Mr Abdulmajid stressed the responsibility of government agencies, regulatory institutions and traditional leaders in preventing the slaughter, processing and sale of meat from animals that die from unknown causes or are otherwise unsafe for consumption.
He called for closer cooperation among relevant agencies, improved intelligence sharing and coordinated enforcement to eliminate the illegal trade in contaminated meat.
The commissioner also directed authorities overseeing slaughterhouses, abattoirs and meat-processing facilities to tighten surveillance and ensure strict adherence to food safety standards.
He further emphasised the need for sustained public awareness campaigns to educate residents about the health dangers associated with consuming meat from diseased or dead animals.
Stakeholders at the meeting commended the police for initiating the engagement and pledged to work with security agencies and government institutions to strengthen monitoring mechanisms and protect public health.
Mr Abdulmajid reaffirmed the command’s commitment to collaborating with relevant agencies and local communities to ensure food safety, protect lives and prosecute individuals whose actions threaten public health.
He also urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities involving the slaughter, transportation, processing or sale of suspected unwholesome meat to the nearest police station or appropriate regulatory authorities.
