NDA Breaks Silence on Missing Cadet, Says Parents Were Promptly Informed

The Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) has dismissed claims that it failed to act over the disappearance of one of its cadets, Stephen Gani, insisting that due procedures were followed and his parents were formally notified.

In a statement issued on Friday in Kaduna, the academy’s public relations officer, Major Reuben Kovangiya, said the NDA was responding to reports circulating on online platforms alleging negligence in handling the cadet’s absence.

According to Kovangiya, Cadet Gani was admitted into the NDA as a member of the 76 Regular Course and resumed training on August 26, 2024. He explained that the cadet’s training progressed normally until April 28, 2025, when he absented himself from the academy without official permission.

He stated that in line with established regulations governing cadet administration, Gani’s parents were formally informed of his absence three days after it occurred. Seven days later, he was struck off the Academy’s strength in accordance with administrative procedures.

The spokesperson disclosed that feedback later received from the parents indicated that Gani’s whereabouts could not be established, prompting the academy to initiate renewed investigative efforts, which are still ongoing.

Kovangiya stressed that the training and administration of cadets at the NDA are strictly guided by military laws, laid-down procedures, and long-standing traditions as outlined in the Academy’s Code of Conduct.

He urged the public to disregard claims suggesting inaction by the NDA regarding the cadet’s disappearance, assuring that the institution remains fully engaged in efforts to resolve the matter.

“We will continue to engage all relevant parties to ensure a positive outcome,” he said, adding that the NDA places high priority on the safety and well-being of all its cadets.

He further noted that the academy has adequate structures in place to account for cadets at all times, including regular stop checks and physical inspections.

Reaffirming the NDA’s core values, Kovangiya described the academy as a center of military and academic excellence, founded on discipline, diligence, loyalty, honor, and valor, and committed to producing well-trained and dedicated officers for the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

A Boko Haram vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) killed more than a dozen soldiers and Civilian JTF members in the Timbuktu triangle of Sambisa Forest, Borno State.

The blast occurred on 20 January 2026 during ongoing counter-terrorism operations across parts of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states.

The Media Information Officer of Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), Lt-Col. Sani Uba, confirmed the incident on Thursday in a statement in Maiduguri. He said troops encountered two VBIEDs while consolidating at a harbour area in Chilaria, one of the group’s hideouts.

According to him, troops neutralised the first vehicle through what he called “swift action.” The second vehicle breached the forward operating base and caused the casualties.

“With the troops’ vigilance, we neutralised one of the VBIEDs. The second one breached our defensive position and affected some of our logistics platforms,” Uba explained.

He said the blast killed several soldiers and civilian JTF members. Others sustained injuries on their limbs and heads.

Troops evacuated the wounded for treatment. They are now receiving care at the 7 Division Medical Hospital in Maiduguri.

Uba also noted that the Nigerian Air Force provided aerial support during the incident to protect ground forces operating in the Timbuktu triangle.

Commenting on the wider operations, he said the security situation across the Theatre Command “remains relatively stable”. He added that troops’ morale and fighting spirit remain high.

He reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to restoring peace and stability in the Northeast region.

Troops of Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) under Desert Sanity V have neutralised eight Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists, along with the surrender of 11 of them with their rifles to the army in the Azir-Wajiroko axis of Borno state.

OPHK Media Information Officer Lt-Col. Sani Uba   in Maiduguri via a statement, disclosed, “On January 9, 2026, troops conducted extensive clearance operations in the Bulaagalda cluster, destroying several active terrorists’ enclaves and camps at Dagumba, Bonne, Yaganari, Gosuri and Umchile,” adding that the Abu Nazir and Abu Ahmed camps were also destroyed by the gallant troops.

Uba further revealed, “During the operation, troops dismantled life-support structures, degraded terrorist logistics and recovered items comprising terrorist flags and weapons, as well as magazines.”

The Lieutenant Colonel stated that there were similar offensive operations in the Yale and Bula Gaida areas, which forced several terrorists to flee in disarray.

This, he explained , led to the destruction of additional logistic facilities and the recovery of weapons, ammunition and a general-purpose machine gun (GPMG).

In a related operation based on credible intelligence, troops engaged the terrorists in the Sojiri-Kayamla axis, where eight insurgents were neutralised.

According to him, the troops also recovered an unspecified number of AK-47 rifles during four-hour operations in the two axes.

Additionally, troops arrested two suspected terrorist logistics collaborators in the Gubio Local Council of the state for supplying terrorists logistics in the Lake Chad region.

He noted that the troops will continue to remain resolute by what Uba described as “sustaining offensive pressures in the dismantling of terrorist networks to restore lasting peace and security in the Northeast.

Military Moves to Secure Lake Chad for Fishing, Trade as Navy Chief Assures Communities

By Tada Jutha, Maiduguri

The Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, has assured residents of the Lake Chad region that the military is intensifying efforts to secure the lake and its adjoining waterways to allow fishing, transportation and other socio-economic activities to thrive again in the Northeast.

Abbas said the safety of Lake Chad and insurgency-affected communities could only be achieved through strong collaboration among the military, other security agencies and local partners, stressing that synergy remains critical to ending terrorism in the region.

The Naval Chief made the remarks on Thursday in Maiduguri during a working visit to naval formations operating within the Lake Chad Basin, including bases in Baga and along the lake’s shores.

Briefing journalists at the Theatre Command, Maimalari Cantonment, Abbas explained that joint operations involving the Armed Forces, security agencies, and the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) were designed to restore confidence and normalcy to communities that depend on the lake for survival.

“Our combined military efforts with other security agencies and the Civilian JTF across Lake Chad and its waterways will enable fishermen and farmers to safely return to their livelihoods,” he said. “By securing the Lake and the many waterways that connect communities in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states, we are reopening the economic lifelines of the region.”

Beyond security operations, the CNS noted that his visit was also aimed at assessing the operational needs of troops deployed in the multinational Lake Chad region, which includes Chad, Cameroon, Nigeria and Niger.

“We are in Maiduguri to evaluate the operational requirements of our personnel in the Lake Chad area and to ensure they have what is needed to effectively carry out their duties,” Abbas added.

He further disclosed that sustained joint military action was intended to deny Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters freedom of movement within the lake and its surrounding waterways, which have been exploited by insurgents for over a decade.

As part of the visit, Vice Admiral Abbas inspected the ongoing construction of the Maiduguri Naval Base (MNAB), located about 10 kilometres east of the city along the Monguno Road, before proceeding to the Naval Base in Baga.

The Naval Chief is also expected to pay a courtesy visit to Borno State Governor Prof. Babagana Zulum at the Government House in Maiduguri, alongside senior officers from the Theatre Command, to further discuss security and development efforts in the state.
