Borno Vaccinates 287,708 People Amid Cholera Outbreak – Health Commissioner
The Borno State Government has vaccinated 287,708 individuals against cholera following an outbreak in the state, according to Prof. Baba Gana, the Commissioner for Health.
Speaking on Friday, Gana announced the official declaration of the cholera outbreak and credited the immunization campaign, which began on September 25, with achieving a 96% success rate. He attributed the absence of fatalities to proactive measures taken by the government and its partners.
“So far, no deaths have been reported from the 17 confirmed cases across the most affected areas, including Maiduguri, Jere, Mafa, Konduga, and Monguno,” Gana stated.
The commissioner revealed that the state received 300,000 doses of Oral Cholera Vaccines (OCV) from the Federal Ministry of Health, which were distributed to displaced persons’ camps and flood-affected communities.
An additional 600,000 doses are expected to manage rising cases of Acute Watery Diarrhoea (AWD), which has been linked to recent flooding.
Gana urged the public to maintain proper hygiene and sanitation and called on the media to support the government’s awareness efforts to curb the spread of the disease.
