Chidimma Adetshina Shines as First Runner-Up at Miss Universe 2024
Nigeria’s Chidimma Adetshina has made the nation proud by finishing as the first runner-up at the 73rd Miss Universe Competition, held at the Arena CDMX in Mexico City, Mexico.
The electrifying finale, which took place early Sunday morning, saw Adetshina in a nail-biting showdown with Denmark’s Victoria Kjaer Theilvig. Ultimately, Theilvig clinched the crown, succeeding Miss Universe 2023, Sheynnis Palacios of Nicaragua.
Described as one of the most competitive events in recent years, the pageant showcased the intelligence, talent, and elegance of women from across the globe. In a celebratory Instagram post, the organizers praised the final contestants, saying, “The final two! Nigeria and Denmark, two incredible women, one unforgettable moment.”
Adetshina’s remarkable performance earned her widespread admiration from the judges and global audiences. Her journey to the Miss Universe stage was not without controversy, as she had earlier withdrawn from the Miss South Africa 2024 competition, citing concerns over her nationality raised by some South Africans. Despite this, she went on to represent Taraba State and secure the Miss Universe Nigeria title.
Adetshina’s achievement rekindles memories of Nigeria’s past successes on the global beauty stage. In 2001, Agbani Darego became the first Black African to win the Miss World crown, a historic moment that inspired countless women across the continent.
