Gombe Governor Yahaya: State Police Will Put Security in Hands of People
Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, has thrown his weight behind the creation of state police, stating it would bring security “closer to the people.
Governor Yahaya stated this while speaking with journalists at State House shortly after meeting with Vice President Kashim Shettima in Abuja on Tuesday.
While acknowledging the need for a constitutional amendment requiring approval from both national and state assemblies, Yahaya expressed confidence in nationwide support for the initiative.
“The whole people of Gombe State are behind the idea,” he said, emphasising the increased control and responsiveness state police would offer.
Highlighting the limitations of the current system, Yahaya pointed out that governors, despite being designated Chief Security Officers, lack direct control over police commissioners.
“The state commissioner is only responsible for his commander in Abuja,” he explained, underscoring the delays this structure creates in addressing security threats.
In Yahaya’s view, state police would empower local authorities to “monitor the situation, implement decisions, and get results.”
He expressed optimism that other states would share this vision, paving the way for a more effective security apparatus.
The governor also reaffirmed his commitment to fulfilling campaign promises. “I didn’t go into this blindfolded,” he declared.
He outlined his achievements across various sectors in the past five years and pledged continued dedication to delivering on his agenda for the remaining three years of his term.
