League of Democrats donates N50m to Borno flood victims
By Tada Jutha, Maiduguri
The League of Northern Democrats (LND) has donated N50 million to the Borno state government to support victims of floods that devastated Maiduguri and its environs.
The Democrats were a recently formed group of patriots from the 19 northern states in the country.
Presenting the flood victims support, on Thursday in Maiduguri, LND Chairman and former Kano state governor, Ibrahim Shekarau, disclosed: “We’re aware of the extent of damages to both lives and property of the people,” stating that the recent floods have also destroyed most of the critical infrastructure, including hospitals and farmlands.
According to him, the league comprises representatives of all political parties in the country.
Additionally, the ex-governor said, “We’re here to extend our heartfelt sympathy to the government and people of the state,” noting that the flood disasters have displaced many residents with hardships.
Shekarau also lamented the massive destruction of houses along with the fears of cholera outbreaks and other waterborne diseases in the metropolis.
The LND boss described the flood disasters as “this is a tragedy that has touched us in the North and the country at large.”
In said that during times of crises, collaboration is, however, critical in overcoming the challenges of natural and human disasters in the northern states.
Shekarau said that this has driven patriots of Democrats to contribute their widow’s mite to the state government to reduce the sufferings of flood victims in the affected communities.
Shekarau further said: “The league comprises virtually a representation from all political parties. When we are meeting, we keep the banner of our parties outside the door. Of course, when the election comes, everybody goes back to that.”
“It is not about any political party or particular individual; it is not about government. It is about the growth and development of the North and, by extension, the entire federation.”
While commending the governor for his swift response to the disaster, he said:
“Your excellency, we commend your tireless efforts in leading the state’s response to this disaster.
“Your swift and determined actions in the face of such adversity have been a source of hope and reassurance to the people of Borno State.”
“You have shown remarkable leadership alongside your team to mobilise resources and ensure that those most affected are not left behind.”
“We also prayed tribute to his royal highness, the Shehu of Borno, for his steadfast leadership and guidance during these challenging times.
“His role in providing moral and spiritual support and offering comfort to the people as they navigate this difficult period.”
Responding, Zulum appreciated the group for the sympathy visit, saying, “We appreciate you for this visit. May Almighty Allah reward you abundantly.
On behalf of the government and people of the state, I am expressing my sincere appreciation to all of you.”
After making the donation, the group
visited the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) for physical assessment of damaged health facilities along Bama Road.
