In halting the resurgence of Boko Haram and the Islamic State of West African Province (ISWAP) terrorism, kidnapping, and banditry, members of the Northern Traditional Rulers Council (NTRC) have convened its 7th executive council meeting in Maiduguri, Borno State.
The Tuesday meeting, which is ongoing at the Multi-Purpose Hall of Government House, will deliberate on the deteriorating security situation.
The meeting of dozens of traditional rulers followed the resurgence of terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping on a daily basis in the Northeast, Northwest, and North-Central regions of the country.
The 7th meeting, themed “Enhanced Security and Development of the North”, attracted eminent traditional leaders, security stakeholders, and other top government officials to deliberate on the deteriorating insecurity situation in the North.
The traditional rulers’ council is expected to issue a communique on the “effective and efficient strategies of restoring peace, unity, and the livelihoods of the people in the affected 19 states.
Governor Babagana Zulum and the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Garbai Al-Amin El-Kanemi, had warned that the Northeast is facing serious threats to both lives and property.
Zulum and the monarch attributed the resurgence of terrorism, kidnapping, and banditry to the federal government’s deprioritisation of the counterterrorism operations in the Sambisa Forest and Lake Chad region.
