The Adamawa Police Command has nabbed one of its officers, an inspector with name withheld, and two members of a vigilante group in the state.
According to the Command, the three suspects were arrested following an allegation of “unprofessional conduct and incivility” towards members of the public.
The State’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje, confirmed the arrest of the trio yesterday to newsmen in Yola, Adamawa State.
He said, “The swift action of the police command was in response to a widely circulated video. It was purportedly showing the inspector and two vigilantes engaging in an assault and unprofessional behaviours against a try cyclist.”
Besides the alleged assault, he noted that the actions of the arrested suspects are a clear breach of the ethics and standards of operational procedures expected of law enforcement personnel.
He said that this underscores the Adamawa State Police Command’s commitment to addressing such allegations seriously to uphold public trust in the police.
Nguroje also emphasised the importance of professionalism and the respect of people’s rights by the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) and its affiliated groups.
As the viral video sparked public condemnations, the spokesman said, “There is the need for continuous vigilance and the adherence to professional standards of law enforcement agencies and the vigilantes in communities.
The Commissioner of Police, Dankombo Morris, assured the public that a thorough investigation will be conducted with appropriate disciplinary actions taken against those found culpable and in accordance with the relevant laws and regulations.
