Azali Assoumani re-elected as Comoros president
Comoros’ President Azali Assoumani has been declared the win of Sunday’s presidential election by the country’s electoral body on Tuesday.
According to the country’s electoral body, Assoumani got 62.97 percent of the votes, in an election that experienced very low voter turnout of only 16.3 percentage of eligible voters.
The election results has been widely critized by opposition party as fraud and a damage to democracy.

A former army chief-of-staff, Colonel Assoumani initially came to power in a military coup in 30th April, 1999.
In 2022, he stepped down as military ruler and contested the presidential election as a civilian, in which he won.
In 2006, he stepped down as president after a new constitution was passed that stipulates rotation of presidency between the three islands of the Union: Grande-Comore, Anjouan and Moheli.
He then retired into farming before returning to politics and winning re-election in 2016 in a vote marred by violence and allegations of irregularities.
He was re-elected again in 2019 and now 2024.
