In response to the escalating crisis in Plateau State, the organization Building Resilience Against Violent Extremism Insurgency and Terrorism (BRAVE-IT) has issued a call for restraint to prevent further escalation of tensions and protect the safety of security forces operating in the region.
Expressing deep concern over the politicization of the crisis, BRAVE-IT has condemned the polarization of the situation in Plateau State, emphasizing the detrimental effects of political interference on exacerbating conflicts. Notably, the organization has highlighted the recent statement from the Coalition of Bokkos Ethnic Youth Nationalities, which alleged that the actions of security forces have increased the vulnerability of residents in Bokkos.
During a recent incident in response to distress calls, security personnel swiftly mobilized from multiple fronts, effectively forcing the assailants to retreat and abandon their hostile mission. The coordinated efforts of the security forces helped quell simultaneous attacks targeted at communities in Kopnanle, Mandang Mushy, in Mangu and Bokkos Local Government Area.
Tragically, the confrontation resulted in the loss of one life and injuries to two individuals, who later succumbed to their injuries while receiving medical treatment.
Following thorough BRAVE-IT categorically absolve any involvement of security personnel in clashes with vigilantes during the operation.
Furthermore, the organization has refuted allegations that security agencies failed to contain hostilities during the incident, reaffirming the commitment of all security forces to eliminate militia groups from the region.
In light of these developments, BRAVE-IT through it’s Director of Communication and Strategy Lawrence Audu has emphasized the critical need to de-escalate tensions, avoid politicizing the crisis, and prioritize the protection of troops to ensure lasting peace in Plateau State.
