DHQ Clarifies Ex-Seaman Abbas Haruna’s Case Amid Misinformation
By Lawrence Bilal Audu
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has addressed recent misinformation surrounding the case of Ex-Seaman Abbas Haruna M5759, a former Nigerian Navy rating. In a press briefing, the Director of Defence Information presented the facts of the matter, citing Haruna’s misconduct during a parade as the starting point of the case.
Ex-Seaman Abbas Haruna, who served under Exercise AYAM AKPATUMA, continually interrupted his Commanding Officer (CO) during a coordinating conference, leading to an order to report to the guard room. He refused to obey, resisted arrest, and fired 16 rounds of ammunition to prevent custody. This led to a court-martial trial.
The General Court Martial (GCM) tried Haruna on three counts: Disobedience to Particular Orders, Resistance to Arrest, and Offences in Relation to Public and Service Property. He pleaded guilty to all charges. The GCM found him guilty, sentencing him to reduction in rate and dismissal with ignominy.
The Chief of Naval Staff confirmed the sentences on September 19, 2024, following the transmission of the Record of Proceedings to Naval Headquarters.
The case highlights concerns about discipline and accountability within the Nigerian military. While some view Haruna’s actions as egregious, others question the fairness of his detention and trial. The Defence Headquarters maintains that due process was followed in the trial and sentencing.
