Nigeria, Saudi Arabia Seal Landmark Defence Pact to Boost Military Cooperation

Nigeria and Saudi Arabia on Tuesday formalised a major step toward deeper security collaboration with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening defence and military cooperation between both nations.

The pact was endorsed in Abuja by Nigeria’s Minister of State for Defence, Dr Bello Mohammed Matawalle, and Saudi Arabia’s Assistant Minister of Defence for Executive Affairs, Dr Khaled Al-Biyari. The agreement was announced through a statement issued by Enderline Chukwu, Assistant Director of Information and Public Relations.

Describing the MoU as “a significant milestone”, Matawalle said the agreement would fortify Nigeria’s defence architecture and boost the operational capacity of the Armed Forces. He noted that the collaboration aligns with the country’s strategic efforts to deepen international partnerships in tackling emerging security threats.

Under the five-year renewable agreement, both countries will cooperate in areas such as military training, joint exercises, intelligence sharing, logistics, technical assistance, and other defence activities agreed upon by both sides. The terms also allow for a review or renewal for another five years, with an option for either country to withdraw with a three-month diplomatic notice.

Matawalle added that the defence pact is expected to yield substantial benefits for Nigeria, including improved military education, enhanced preparedness through joint drills, and strengthened counter-terrorism efforts—particularly critical as the country continues to confront complex security challenges.

He expressed confidence that the partnership would open new channels of operational cooperation and further consolidate Nigeria’s engagement with global allies committed to peace and security.

Kadafur to New LG Chairmen: Serve with Integrity, Not Power

By Tada Jutha, Maiduguri

Borno State Acting Governor Alhaji Umar Usman Kadafur has charged the 27 newly elected local government chairmen to see their victory at the polls not as a reward for power, but as a heavy responsibility to serve the people with transparency, vision and accountability.

Speaking on Thursday during the swearing-in ceremony at the Government House in Maiduguri, Kadafur described the council chairmen as the driving force behind the implementation of the state’s 25-year Development Plan and the engines of its 10-year strategic transformation agenda.

According to him, the ceremony marked more than a political transition, stressing that it symbolised sacred trust between the elected officials and the people they were meant to serve.

“Today, we gather here to witness a profound transition of democratic duty and a sacred trust,” the acting governor said. “You have not just won elections at the polls; you have accepted a covenant with the people of Borno State.”

Kadafur noted that, beyond electoral success, the chairmen volunteered to shoulder the hopes, struggles, and aspirations of citizens at the grassroots, which he described as the bedrock of any thriving society.

He warned them against seeing their positions as symbols of authority, stating clearly that governance at the local level is about service, sacrifice and responsibility.

“Let me be unequivocal: this ceremony is not a celebration of power; it is an induction into a furnace of responsibility,” he said.

The acting governor reminded the chairmen that the people in their local government areas are not their subjects but their principals, urging them to prioritise efficient service delivery and person-centred leadership.

Highlighting the importance of local councils in sustaining peace and development, Kadafur said the quality of governance at the grassroots would determine shared prosperity and renewed hope across the 27 councils.

He emphasised the importance of managing funds allocated to local governments with utmost care, caution, and honesty, as they serve as the lifeline of communities.

“You must be guardians of every naira spent. Focus on essentials that directly improve the lives, security, and dignity of our people,” he charged, warning against embarking on vanity projects that do not address real needs.

On workers’ welfare, Kadafur described the timely payment of salaries and entitlements as non-negotiable, adding that productivity and discipline must be restored across the local government system.

“All council workers must report to their duty posts promptly. Productivity and discipline must return to the system,” he said.

The acting governor further reminded the chairmen of their moral and legal obligations, declaring that accountability goes beyond institutions.

“You are accountable to God Almighty, the law and the people. Your offices must be temples of transparency,” he said, urging them to welcome public scrutiny and actively engage their communities in governance.

He also called on residents across the state to remain vigilant and hold their leaders accountable to the promises made during their campaigns.

“People’s vigilant engagement is the lifeblood of democracy and good governance,” Kadafur added, urging citizens to closely monitor the performance of their elected officials at the grassroots.

Vehicle-borne IED kills a dozen soldiers, Civilian JTF in Borno

By Tada Jutha, Maiduguri

A Boko Haram vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) killed more than a dozen soldiers and Civilian JTF members in the Timbuktu triangle of Sambisa Forest, Borno State.

The blast occurred on 20 January 2026 during ongoing counter-terrorism operations across parts of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states.

The Media Information Officer of Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), Lt-Col. Sani Uba, confirmed the incident on Thursday in a statement in Maiduguri. He said troops encountered two VBIEDs while consolidating at a harbour area in Chilaria, one of the group’s hideouts.

According to him, troops neutralised the first vehicle through what he called “swift action.” The second vehicle breached the forward operating base and caused the casualties.

“With the troops’ vigilance, we neutralised one of the VBIEDs. The second one breached our defensive position and affected some of our logistics platforms,” Uba explained.

He said the blast killed several soldiers and civilian JTF members. Others sustained injuries on their limbs and heads.

Troops evacuated the wounded for treatment. They are now receiving care at the 7 Division Medical Hospital in Maiduguri.

Uba also noted that the Nigerian Air Force provided aerial support during the incident to protect ground forces operating in the Timbuktu triangle.

Commenting on the wider operations, he said the security situation across the Theatre Command “remains relatively stable”. He added that troops’ morale and fighting spirit remain high.

He reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to restoring peace and stability in the Northeast region.

Army neutralizes 8 terrorists, 11 surrendered with their rifles in Borno

By Tada Jutha, Maiduguri

Troops of Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) under Desert Sanity V have neutralised eight Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists, along with the surrender of 11 of them with their rifles to the army in the Azir-Wajiroko axis of Borno state.

OPHK Media Information Officer Lt-Col. Sani Uba   in Maiduguri via a statement, disclosed, “On January 9, 2026, troops conducted extensive clearance operations in the Bulaagalda cluster, destroying several active terrorists’ enclaves and camps at Dagumba, Bonne, Yaganari, Gosuri and Umchile,” adding that the Abu Nazir and Abu Ahmed camps were also destroyed by the gallant troops.

Uba further revealed, “During the operation, troops dismantled life-support structures, degraded terrorist logistics and recovered items comprising terrorist flags and weapons, as well as magazines.”

The Lieutenant Colonel stated that there were similar offensive operations in the Yale and Bula Gaida areas, which forced several terrorists to flee in disarray.

This, he explained , led to the destruction of additional logistic facilities and the recovery of weapons, ammunition and a general-purpose machine gun (GPMG).

In a related operation based on credible intelligence, troops engaged the terrorists in the Sojiri-Kayamla axis, where eight insurgents were neutralised.

According to him, the troops also recovered an unspecified number of AK-47 rifles during four-hour operations in the two axes.

Additionally, troops arrested two suspected terrorist logistics collaborators in the Gubio Local Council of the state for supplying terrorists logistics in the Lake Chad region.

He noted that the troops will continue to remain resolute by what Uba described as “sustaining offensive pressures in the dismantling of terrorist networks to restore lasting peace and security in the Northeast.
